Requesting an API to monitor news for a defined list of companies

We are building an internal workflow tool for our consulting team to improve how we monitor and analyse developments in a defined set of companies within the Energy & Natural Resources sector.

Using our existing Refinitiv licence, we intend to programmatically retrieve news and company updates relating to a small watchlist of companies. The data will be used solely for internal analytical purposes by licensed users within our organisation.

The system will:

• Surface relevant news items based on predefined themes (e.g. restructuring, M&A activity, cost optimisation initiatives)

• Generate internal summaries and analytical briefings

• Support internal business development workflows by helping our team respond more quickly to market developments

We will not redistribute, republish, or expose Refinitiv content externally. All outputs are internal derivative analysis intended to support our consulting work.

You can use the LSEG Data Library for Python to retrieve news headlines and stories based on a news query which is the same news query used in the News Monitory app in the LSEG Workspace.

The example is on GitHub.

Typically, the data from LSEG Workspace desktop should be used on that desktop machine. It is better to confirm this use case with your LSEG account team or sales team.

Hi Jira,

I think I may not have been entirely clear with my original question. We need authentication credentials – an API key. Either that or instructions on how to create one. The notebook you linked us doesn’t include it, but mentions a config file that must be provided to connect to the API successfully.

What LSEG product are you using: LSEG Workspace, or Data Platform?

For the LSEG Workspace, you can use the LSEG Data Libraries to retrieve news through the Workspace desktop session and the API key is optional.

Typically, you can use the App Key Generator (APPKEY) tool in the LSEG Workspace to generate application keys.
